It was quite by chance that Schubert came across an anthology of poems by an unknown young Prussian poet, Wilhelm Müller. This happy discovery led to the composition of one of Schubert’s best-loved song cycles, Die schöne Müllerin. The songs tell of young love, of travel, of the beauties of nature, and also of jealousy, despair, and suicide. This is youthful music – both poet and composer were in their twenties – and in Allan Clayton, we have the UK’s most exciting young tenor to perform it for us.
