Oboe Course Repertoire List
Every participant will be expected to bring their choice of 2 studies, 5 pieces (1 from each of the periods listed) and, if they can, one orchestral extract book. This really isn’t as daunting as it looks as you may bring pieces ofany standard starting with the Second Book of Oboe Solos and Hinke Studies. However, if I think that you are capable of something more demanding I may ask you if you have anything more difficult.
You may of course bring the repertoire greats (Mozart, Bach, Strauss etc) but please do try and be as original as possible, especially those with wider repertoires and search for more generally unplayed works such as the ones on my list. This will make everyone’s lives more interesting and will help to dispel the myth about our supposedly limited solo repertoire.

Note from Nicholas Daniel
It seemed to me that there are few enough opportunities for people interested in oboe playing to meet, share ideas and benefit from expert tuition from various teachers of international repute, all within the space of 10 days. It seemed, therefore, high time the oboe course at Ramsgate was ressurected.
THE 1986 OBOE COURSE IS AIMED AT ANY OBOIST OF ANY STANDARD WHETHER THEY BE AMATEUR, WOULD-BE PROFESSIONAL OR PROFESSIONAL, TEACHER OR PLAYER
Participants will be offered really practical help on every aspect of oboe playing from some of this country’s leading players and teachers. Topics covered will include interpretation, practising, reedmaking, and good solid help on technique and all this will take place in a non-competitive, non-neurotic and helpful environment incorporating a highly organised daily schedule comprising technique classes, warm up classes, reed workshops, private lessons, and of course masterclasses all tailored to individual standards.
As the resident teacher for the whole of the course I will take all the daily classes as well as several masterclasses and will coach chamber music if required, or if [ have a minute! Only the more advanced players will play in the masterclasses although everyone can listen. Be prepared to audition for masterclass places on the first day.
Our two guest teachers are both great leaders in their fields. Celia Nicklin is the principal oboe in the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields and professor at the Royal Academy of Music. Renowned also as a chamber musician and soloist her recording of the Vaughan Williams Concerto is generally considered the best available. Celia will be with us for two full days.
David Reichenberg, our other guest teacher, is the principal oboist of many celebrated period instrument orchestras including The English Concert, directed by Trevor Pinnock and he is arguably the best baroque oboist in Europe. He has made many records and is heard all over the world in concerts and on the radio. David will be with us to help with baroque interpretation on both our modern and on the original oboes for those who have them although this is not a requirement of the course and there will be instruments at the course for people to try. On his very full day with us David will give a short recital, definitely an event to look forward to.
Both the guest teachers will have their own daily schedules which may vary from mine, and there are some added extras I haven’t mentioned, Suffice to say that with the flutes and clarinets and their excellent teachers this course could well prove to be the very best available, so put the date in your diary, fill in the form and post it off – I can really guarantee you your money’s worth and I’ll see you there.
